My Story
My love for coding and design began in middle school when I was creating backgrounds, themes, and icons for all of my friends’ Myspace accounts with HTML and CSS. It is disappointing that the social media site faded in popularity because it was a wonderful influencer for young minds to develop digitally. At the time, I did not know the extent of coding and did not look into it any further.
I began working from age 14 and continued after graduation. It wasn’t until age 25, I registered for my local community college. After the first semester, I was accepted into the National Scene Foundation S-STEM Scholars program and Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society. I earned my Associate’s degree in General Studies, although I completed Java I & II, Computer Science I & II, and Game Design. I needed an additional semester to complete Discrete Structures and Differential Equations for Computer Science, but I made the decision to finish as General Studies and move on to University.
There aren’t enough hours in a day and time is always ticking. I felt like I wasted a lot of years by waiting until 25 to start school. Most of my classmates were fresh out of high school and lived at home with their parents. I decided to attend University of Maryland – Global Campus (UMGC) to allow myself the time to work during the day and finish school on nights and weekends. While I did trade searching for parking and attendance expectancy, I had to make up for the loss of personal interaction. The key was motivation to read, lecture, and learn on your own. I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Software Security and Development with a minor in Digital Media and Design. There are still many future assignments to come and techniques to master and I plan to return to school at some point in the future.
Work Life
My professional experience has been in leading roles that require organization and self sufficiency. I love to look at things from different perspectives and hear from everyone in a team. I pride myself on my integrity and can reliably work with confidential files. I have been known to have a keen eye for detail in all aspects of my environment and seem to pick up on things that others look over.
As a teenager, I started as a sandwich artist at Subway into Shift Leader. I knew I had a bigger purpose than food and I always loved helping my mom at her office when she brought me in as a kid, so I decided to switch things up. My family’s watercraft business was missing someone for the back end and I needed something entry-level. I picked up on everything immediately and felt comfortable to influence changes because it was family. I was able to have a hand in every part of running the business, besides actually turning the wrenches.
Current Status
After spending many years working through the day and doing homework at night, I am 100% confident in myself to step out of my comfort zone at work and dive into the tech world! I am looking to become a Full Stack Developer as I have studied many different languages through school. Not only am I able to solve algorithms and sequences, but I have a wonderful creative side that I display in my art and designs. My skills and personality are a great investment for any company. My passion shines in my work and I plan to learn and grow wherever I choose to end up.
